Hancock Presents Drawing Workshop to ACED

The students in the University of Missouri’s ACED art class on the morning of Saturday, February 23rd were unaware that their guest instructor, who was leading them through a portrait-drawing exercise, has painted portraits for celebrity singers Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, for Lieutenant Governor of Alaska Loren Leman, and whose work is collected around the world.

Artist David C. Hancock moved from Florence, Italy to Kansas City in December 2006. After getting to know Georgia Schmittling, Community Education Coordinator at Longview Community College, Georgia invited him to come in for a day to teach drawing to a class of adults with developmental disabilities.

Hancock focused on proportion, and led the group in an exercise in which each person constructed a portrait by practicing basic measurements. The students “found themselves” in their own drawings through the eager practice of controlled motor skills, wild imagination, and laughing through all of the different hairstyle possibilities. Each portrait turned out unique, very expressive, and the students all had a great time.

Hancock has previously given demonstrations in Derrick Thomas Academy in Kansas City, as well as churches and schools in Chicago and Alaska. He is a young painter whose reputation is on the rise, having earned international recognition through shows and competitions and being listed in “The Best Art of 2006” by The Artist’s Magazine.
